Junior Inter County 2009/2010

Full report of Four Counties Tournament at Burnham on 25th April 2010

Having won the Under 13s last year and the under 11s the year before, Bucks narrowly missed out in both age groups this year at Burnham on April 25th and had to settle for second place in both. Very creditable performances though – losing to Hants, a very strong county, in both groups is no disgrace. 4/1 victories over Berks and Hants in both groups clinched the second place for both teams.

Encouragingly for the future, the gap between Bucks and Hants appears to be closing and we are now fielding players from North Bucks as well South Bucks. The development of youngsters in North Bucks, notably at Shenley Leisure Centre, is a great step forward.

Our squads this year were:

Other reserves not available on the day were Jan-seb Shah for the under 11s and Tom Burge for the under 13s.

Particular congratulations to Huw Riddall and Amy Jones for remaining undefeated throughout the tournament but all players performed well. James Wyatt, Edward and Oli won 2 from 3; Harry Maskell and Brian 1 from 3; Freddie, Harry Hewitt and Gareth 1 from 2; and finally Harry Chapples who stood in at 5 in one match went down with a fighting 1/3 result.

Amongst the grittiest performances were Harry Hewitt with an 11/10 result in the fifth against Berks; Amy Jones winning 3/2 against Oxon; Huw Riddall with a 3/2 against Hants; Will Piper with a 3/2 against Oxon; Edward Eaton-Hart and Freddie Evans with 3/2s against Hants and Berks. Another stirling performance, though losing 0/3, was James Wyatt’s 9/11, 9/11, 9/11 loss against Hants.

Well done to all though!

2nd Stage

Under 19 Boys.

Junior report: Boys U 19

After finishing second in our group in Stage 1 of the Inter-county competition, Bucks U19 boys hosted Group Y of this year’s event in the newly opened Bletchley Leisure Centre in Milton Keynes. On Sunday 24 January 2010, we took on Berkshire, Cambridgeshire and Lincolnshire for the right to go forward to the Trophy final.

The team started very brightly against Lincolnshire with convincing wins for Ben Paine and Charlie Yerrell which left us needing one win from three. A titanic match from Mahdi Ali against a top-twenty player gave us the tie against Lincolnshire with Will Buckfield adding another 3-0 win at the end to wrap things up 4-1.

In the second fixture against Cambridgeshire we struggled at the top of the order against very experienced opponents but wins at 3, 4 and 5 left us needing to win the tie against Berkshire to seal our place in the Trophy final.

The Berkshire match was a nail-biter but once again Charlie Yerrell tore into his opponent to give us a good start to round off a very successful day for him, winning all three of his matches 3-0. Ben Paine looked to be cruising to a comfortable win but from 2-0 up found himself in a scrap which he did well to win in five hard games. Meanwhile, Stefan, still struggling with his fitness following injury, simply had too much pride to go home winless and turned around a 0-2 deficit to win in five, sealing the tie for Bucks. Then Ali delivered another 3-2 win for Bucks and we were in the Trophy final.

Under 13 Boys

Bucks squad continued their improvement in national ranking by getting to within one match of reaching this years finals. They couldn’t quite emulate the feat of this year’s under 19 boys and under 15 girls but an excellent performance nevertheless.

4/1 victories over Leicestershire and Berkshire followed a 0/5 loss to a very strong North Wales team. Despite the final score line, there were some excellent performances in this match.

All seven of the squad pictured and listed below played in one or more of the three matches

The squad comprised:-

  1. Huw Riddall
  2. James Wyatt
  3. Scott Jones
  4. Tom Burge
  5. Gareth Thomas
  6. Alex Dyson
  7. Harry Chapples

As with the Under 19s and Under 15s this year, Bucks Under 13s included a team member from the Shenley Club in Milton Keynes. It’s great to see representation now from North Bucks in our county teams. I used to refer to the area as a “Junior Squash Desert”. Hopefully, the good work at Shenley Leisure Centre will produce more county players in the future. Perhaps, other North Bucks clubs too.

All three of this year’s newcomers to the squad performed well at number five in the three matches. Gareth Williams losing 1/3 against the strongest team North Wales and and Harry Chapples and Alex Dyson winning 3/1 and 3/0 against Leicestershire and Berkshire respectively.

The top four players all won matches too: Huw Riddall 2 from 3 at number 1; James Wyatt 1 from 3 at number 2 and losing narrowly 2/3 and 12/14 in the 5th game in our final match; Scott Jones at 3 won 2 of his 3 matches as did Tom Burge at number 4.

Under 17 Girls

The under 17 girls travelled to Abingdon in Oxon for matches against Oxon, Hampshire and Worcs.

They won comfortably 5-0 against Oxon and Worcs. A much closer match against Hamps resulted in a 2-3 loss.

This left them 2nd on the day which was good enough to qualify for the trophy finals on 28 March 2010

GIRLS UNDER 13's FIRST STAGE INTER COUNTY MATCH ( Region II ) on 25th October 2009

The Bucks Girls Under 13's – Amy Jones, Alice Fedorovsky, Rachel Albin and Rebecca Meyrick ( Reserve) went to Kingswood in Basildon - Essex hosting the fixtures. They were joined by Hertfordshire and Oxfordshire.

Our first match was against Herts. Amy Jones started well but was out foxed by Grace Gear, losing 1-3. Both Alice Fedorovsky and Rachel Albin lost 0-3 to their opponents whom by far more experience in this circuits.

Second match was against Essex – they proved too strong for our girls. Once again Amy Jones fought hard against her close rival Elise Lazarus but lose 1-3. Alice Fedorovsky lose 0-3 to Collette Whittington and a big round applaused to Rachel Albin who managed to grab one game in her match against Lauren Conway but lose 1-3. A big praise to Rebecca Meyrick(R) for her bravery against Chloe Rudkin(R) but lose 0-3.

Finally, our third match was against Oxon which we won 3-0. Seemingly, Oxon was the slightly weaker county as they were one player down. Amy Jones won 3-0 comfortably against Katherine Horsley and another big round applaused to Alice Fedorosky for playing very well against Eve Coxon and won 3-1.

Last but not least, I would like to congratulate all the girls under13 in their excellent effort and especially to our newcomers girls from Holmer Green and Chesham 1879 for their magnificent participation and bravery. We now need to look forward to a strong performance in stage II against slightly weaker opponents one assumes. Well done, Girls.

Bucks managed to came third overall and likewise, we will have to wait and see which group we go into in the 2nd stage, early next year.

BoysUnder 19First Stage:

On Sunday 11 October 2009, Bucks U19 boys took on Berkshire, Oxfordshire and Warwickshire in Stage 1 of the Inter-county competition. Following the withdrawal of Charlie Wyatt and Stefan Lubek through illness and injury, we faced a tough task to qualify for the winners’ group in Stage 2 of the event. As it turned out, Warwickshire were the team to beat and even if we’d had a full strength team might have proved a little too strong for us.

Nevertheless, our team put in some good performances against decent opposition and in two hard-fought contests with Oxfordshire and Berkshire came out on top. In the match against Warwickshire all our team fought hard but Ali was our only winner.

Finishing 2nd in a tough group was a good result and my thanks go to all the players for turning out and performing so well. Stage 2 will be played on 24 January 2010.

Bucks Under 15 Boys – Region 4 Inter county stage 1 result

As a result of last year’s excellent result in getting to the Under 15 Trophy final, Bucks this year ended up in a very strong group, including last year’s final winners Kent. The other two counties – Surrey and Sussex – also proved to be very strong. Our squad of Ben Sheldon, Joe Yerrell, Huw Riddall, Ed Walker, Joe Elfasi and Scott Jones nevertheless put in some good performances. In particular Ben Sheldon did extremely well to win two matches at one.

Detailed results are as follows:=

Bucks versus Kent

  1. Ben Sheldon lost to Josh Masters – 6/11, 7/11, 8/11
  2. Joe Yerrell lost to James Evans – 1/11, 1/11, 5/11
  3. Huw Riddall lost to Ryan Duke – 8/11, 6/11, 5/11
  4. Ed Walker lost to Bradley Masters – 3/11, 8/11, 3/11
  5. Joe Elfasi lost to Aidan Spinks – 0/11, 2/11, 8/11

Bucks versus Sussex

  1. Ben Sheldon beat Jacob Osborne – 4/11, 12/10, 11/8, 11/4
  2. Joe Yerrell lost to Danny Berkeley – 9/11, 11/9, 11/4, 9/11, 8/11
  3. Huw Riddall lost to Harvey Van Biel – 8/11, 4/11, 5/11
  4. Ed Walker lost to Ryan Johnson – 5/11, 4/11, 5/11
  5. Scott Jones lost to Curtis Malik – 4/11, 3/11, 7/11

Bucks versus Surrey

  1. Ben Sheldon beat Jay McCluskey – 14/12, 8/11, 11/5, 11/4
  2. Joe Yerrell lost to Alex Phillips – 3/11, 2/11, 7/11
  3. Huw Riddall lost to Tom Bailey – 10/12, 11/7, 3/11, 11/7, 5/11
  4. Ed Walker lost to Mike Pinggera – 11/9, 3/11 2/11, 5/11
  5. Joe Elfasi lost to Ben Windle – 7/11, 4/11, 8/11

We now need to look forward to a strong performance in stage 2 against slightly weaker opponents one assumes.

BOYS UNDER 17 FIRST STAGE INTER-COUNTY MATCH

These are the full results.

As pointed out Oxford had 3, Warks and Glous had 4 players ranked higher than Ben – our number 1. This was a very tough draw.

In spite of that, Ellis won at 6 in his first ever match against Glos.

Tom P had a good fight against Matt Boal ranked 30 places above him taking the first and narrowly losing the 4th.

In the second match v Oxford Owen had a good win against Alex Noakes – maintaining his cool despite a strong fight back from the no15 ranked U15 in the country and Tom P beat Kian - a stalwart of the Oxford team for the second time in 3 days (for Challoners on Friday!).

Ben has a horrid job at 1 playing 2 top 20 players, but very nearly beat Tom Wellstead against Oxford, eventually narrowly losing 2-3.

In the last match Tom Limebear had probably the best win of the day against James Prendeville of Warks (ranked 36 at U17) matching him power shot for power shot and keeping his cool when the rackets and the expletives were flying!

Joe had a typically combative debut and managed to beat the Oxfordshire no 6 in the second game so gaining a victory in his first showing for the U17 team.

All in all a lot of tough experience and (Ellis) a new player blooded in county competition. I’m looking forward to working with the squad over the next year ready for a fairer bash in 2010/11 when we are a year older and the other teams have lost some of their players to the U19’s.
